(Pharmacy and the U.S. Health Care System)
Course Description:
Management and accounting principles related to community and
hospital pharmacy practice and computers in pharmacy practice.
This course examines the contemporary health care delivery system
and pharmacists’ role within that system. Major legislation
that has shaped the structure and financing of health care will
be reviewed, Students will become familiar with various
concepts, systems, and processes that are continually evolving
as we move closer toward clinically integrated health care.
Career opportunities in pharmacy are examined.
Prerequisite:
First year standing in the College of Pharmacy
Course Proficiencies:
The student will be able to:
- Describe the organization and evolvement
of the health care system in the United States.
- Explain the advantages and disadvantages
of managed care for patients and health care providers.
- Describe the major legislative events that
have impacted on the health care system.
- Identify any changes that may be influencing
the pharmacist's role in the health care system.
- Identify the missions and constituencies
of the major pharmacy organizations and discuss how they
interact with themselves and other health care organizations.
- Identify the major management and economic
issues related to pharmaceutical care and assess how they should
be addressed by pharmacists.
- Discuss the costs and benefits of pharmaceutical
care for the patient.
- Develop appropriate marketing strategies
for convincing consumers, managed care administrators and other
health care providers of the value of pharmaceutical care.
- Discuss a variety of career opportunities
open to pharmacy graduates including those in chain, independent,
institutional (including long-term care) and managed care pharmacy,
as well as the pharmaceutical industry.
