Course of Study Leading to a Pharm.D. Degree

SEMESTER II

PHARMACY SKILLS PROGRAM II
PHAR 4251

Course Description: Laboratories/demonstrations in the basic pharmaceutical sciences, problem solving sessions, practice site visitations, and application of computers in pharmacy.

Prerequisite: First year standing in the College of Pharmacy

Course Proficiencies: The student will be able to:

  1. List the properties (physical and chemical) of individual functional groups.
  2. Predict and draw the structure of chemical instability products of individual functional groups.
  3. Predict and draw the structure of metabolites of individual functional groups.
  4. Predict physical-chemical properties of a drug based upon the functional groups present in the drug.
  5. Predict and draw the structures of chemical instability products of drugs based upon the functional groups present.
  6. Predict the metabolism of a drug based upon the functional groups present.
  7. Successfully complete laboratory exercises in anatomy, physiology and pathology as assigned by the instructor:
    a. Anatomy
    b. Problem Solving/Case Studies
  8. Successfully complete laboratory exercises regarding various dosage forms with emphasis on drug-delivery systems.
    a. Ointments
    b. Suppositories
    c. Lip Balms, Transdermal organogels
    d. Aerosols
    e. Controlled Release Products
    f. Solutions
    g. Sterile Products
    h. Emulsions
    i. Dosage Form Comparisons
  9. Demonstrate computer literacy with the following software:
    a. Power Point
    b. Spread Sheet
    c. Data Base
    d. Micromedex
    e. Presentation Utilizing Power Point
  10. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of pharmacy practice diversity after visiting two additional practice sites.
  11. Be able to perform blood pressure measurements on patients and to discuss said measurements with them.
  12. Be able to communicate with patients at a basic level during "brown bag" medication review sessions.
  13. Demonstrate the ability to functions as a viable team member during group problem solving sessions.
  14. Demonstrate the ability to retrieve appropriate drug information.
