Coogs Pounce in The Woodlands
UHCOP Students Win Disease State Management, 2 Divisions of Clinical Skills Competititon at TSHP Meeting
UH College of Pharmacy Pharm.D. students took top honors at the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) 2018 Annual Seminar April 6-8 in The Woodlands, claiming wins in the Disease State Management Competition and two divisions of the Clinical Skills Competition.
Third-year student Erica Morales secured the victory in the TSHP Research & Education Foundation Disease State Management competition, while classmate Sara Mirjamali recognized with an Honorable Mention. In the competition, individual students review a simulated patient's medical chart, meet with a "standardized" patient (a member of the three-judge panel), and document any relevant new information from the consultation and adjustments to the patient's care plan. The students are judged on their communication, interpersonal, education, documentation, clinical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
In the TSHP Research & Education Foundation Clinical Skills Competition, first-year students Amanda Gee and Katelynn Tran won the P1 Division and third-year students Ibrahim Chowdhury and Sean Badal won the P3 Division. In addition, third-year students Lucas Merten and Lauren Goldberg brought home an Honorable Mention in the P3 Division.
The Clinical Skills Competition requires two-person teams to develop a therapeutic plan and present recommendations based on a review of the patient's medical chart and consulting appropriate clinical/pharmaceutical references. Teams are scored based on their documentation, presentation and performance during a follow-up question-and-answer session with a panel of judges.
Competitors are expected to be prepared to explain their rationale and defend their assessments and recommendations with respect to acute and chronic medical problems, drug-related problems, and health care needs of the patient, as well as answer questions designed to gauge the students' knowledge and understanding of clinical pharmacology, toxicology and therapeutics.
