Teaching Responsibilities

PCOL 6371 Advanced Pharmacology II
Lecture Topic: Anti-Inflammatory Agents
Class hours: 4

Scholarly Interests

Research interests in the pharmacology of receptors and signal transduction pathways for neurotransmitters in the mammalian eye. Studies are directed toward identifying and characterizing subtypes of prejunctional (autoreceptors and heteroreceptors) and postjunctional receptors in the iris-ciliary body and retina. Receptors of interest include those for norepinephrine, acetylcholine, serotonin, prostaglandins, dopamine, histamine and neuropeptides. Research techniques include in vitro assays of neurotransmitter release, organ bath studies, receptor binding studies and radioimmunoassay of hormones and second messengers, and in vivo measurement of intraocular pressure in experimental animals. Extensive characterization of mechanism of glutamate-induced excitotoxicity and neuroprotection in mammalian retina. Other research interests include studies on the regulation of uveal norepinephrine release by oxidative stress, mechanism of intraocular lowering effect of bicyclic hexahydroaporphines. The goal of this research is to identify potential target sites that might be of importance in the therapy of ocular diseases such as glaucoma, uveitis and retinal degenerations.
