Family Weekend Schedule of Events

**Please note that the event location for the Fall for UH Family Weekend program on Friday evening from 6:00-10:00pm will be in the Student Center Ballroom due to the impending possibility of rain this evening.

Events will continue to be added and the Saturday schedule will not be confirmed until the football game time is confirmed. Check back often for updates.

Friday, October 14

  • 9:00am – 6:00pm

    Family Weekend Check-in and Family Headquarters, Student Center South- Houston Room Ticket Office
    All registered participants should check in to pick up your packets, including the Guide to Family Weekend, wristbands, tickets and other goodies! Stop by this location anytime you need assistance or just want to take a break. Sponsored by The Dean of Students Office All families are strongly encouraged to check-in on Friday!

    This is your opportunity to share your student’s college experience. Please ask your student to contact his/her professor for permission in advance. Please note that some classes will not be able to accommodate visitors due to limited space.

    Join University Career Services for breakfast and chat with our career counselors about exploring related pathways to success, enhancing your students’ resume and cover letter, and practice interviewing skills for their job/internship search. Meet our student ambassadors and tour our office to receive your free giveaway!

    Tour of M.D. Anderson Library and Exhibits, M.D. Anderson Library
    Visit the M.D. Anderson Library for a tour of the space students voted “Best Place to Study” in 2015 and 2016. Chat with library staff about the technology, services, and study spaces available to students, and explore library exhibits, including “Storied: The First Ten Years of the Creative Writing Program,” which details the founding of the program and showcases works by alumni. Tours of the building will be offered every half hour starting at 10am. Don’t have time for a tour? Stop by anytime from 10am to 12pm to pick up brochures and free giveaways.

    Campus Community Garden, Corner of Cullen and Wheeler in the park
    The Campus Community Garden at the University of Houston teaches students how to garden organically while giving back to the community by providing healthy produce to local food banks. Participants may sample food from the garden, receive a tour and brief history of the garden and have the opportunity to learn the “ins-and-outs” of managing a garden including weeding, planting, seeding and harvesting of the produce. Participants will gain a better understanding of agricultural sustainability and receive some fresh herbs to take home to remember this experience! Sponsored by The Office of Sustainability.

    Caring From Afar: What you need to know to help create a positive transition to UH for your student and yourself, Student Center South, Bayou City Room 219
    The college experience is a fun but also stressful time for both students and family. This workshop explores ways to manage the necessary balance between supporting your student while providing the independence that is critical for their success in college. If you are unsure how to support your student because either you didn’t attend college or this is the first of your children to attend college then this session will be of great support to you.     The Campus Recreation fitness program offers over 50 different group fitness classes a week to help your student get involved, stay in shape, and feel great! We would like to extend you the same opportunity to participate in our licensed programs. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, easy to follow dance-fitness party that will change the way you think about fitness. The cardiovascular workout will make you sweat as you boogie to the beats of international rhythms. Great for everyone in the family.

    The University Eye Institute, at the U of H College of Optometry, is located adjacent to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, near the corner of Wheeler and Calhoun. In addition, find out about the full range of eye care services that are available at the UEI for your entire family. Students at the University of Houston have a bright future!     Spec’s Beverage and Food Appreciation Lab (Room S116), 1st floor South Lobby of Hilton College. Meet the Dean of the Conrad N. Hilton College and receive an update on what’s happening at Hilton College. Then you’ll hear from some student leaders and how their experiences here have enhanced their professional development. This discussion will be followed by a tour of our facilities, and coffee and dessert in Cougar Grounds—our student-run coffee shop.     Come enjoy music and light refreshments that represent various cultures at the University of Houston. Students will share their wonderful experiences being at such a diverse institution. You will also have the opportunity to mingle with staff from the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the International Student and Scholar Services office and learn about the diversity at the university.

    Join representatives from the Office of Scholarships/Financial Aid and Financial Services for a discussion on the financial aid process for continuing students, external scholarship opportunities, Cougar Card information, and more. Come learn about the financial resources provided by UH and have the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation.

    The Campus Recreation fitness program offers over 50 different group fitness classes a week to help your student get involved, stay in shape, and feel great! We would like to extend you the same opportunity to participate in our licensed programs. This mind-body fusion class is the perfect combination of everything you want and enjoy. Featuring short bursts of cardiovascular and strength training for all-over body conditioning. Traditional Pilates and Yoga with an added twist of dynamic balance, dance, plyometrics, and functional training. You should definitely give this one a try, great for all levels of fitness.

Beginning at 1 p.m., start off with a free guided tour that will spark your imagination. From there, bring your own ideas to life using the provided art-making materials. Bring your imagination and wear clothes that are suited to making art.

  • Library Exhibits: “Storied: The First Ten Years of the Creative Writing Program” & “USS Houston”

    Friday: 7:00am – 9:45pm; Saturday: 8:00am – 7:45pm; Sunday: 11:00am – 1:45am
    “Storied: The First Ten Years of the Creative Writing Program,” located on the first floor of the M.D. Anderson Library, highlights the founding and first decade of the UH Creative Writing Program, showcasing works by alumni and spotlighting the lives and careers of faculty members. “USS Houston,” a permanent exhibit located on the second floor of the MD Anderson Library, tells the story of the USS Houston (CA-30), a heavy cruiser launched in 1929, and her crew. The exhibition features original letters and artifacts from the ship and the POW camps, an American flag made by prisoners-of-war in Saigon, and vintage photographs of USS Houston crew members. Paintings of the ship are also on display, as well as a newly restored model, ship's bell, and two uniforms.

    Even though it’s October, Houston can still be HOT! If your family needs to cool off, take some time to enjoy our beautiful outdoor leisure pool complete with slides, and waterfall. A perfect time for the younger siblings who may just want to have some fun in the sun. Lifeguards will be on duty, children under the age of 18 must have a parent present.
