    Cougars Giving Back

    (walk-in) Take a moment out of your busy day to make a difference! Stop by our Cougars Give Back station located right outside of Family Weekend check-in areas and help build care packages for the Star of Hope, which provides services and shelter to Houston’s homeless men, women and children. Help us build care packages and write notes of encouragement for those who need it most. Do you collect toiletries from hotels? Consider donating travel size shampoo, soap, conditioner, combs, razors, toothpaste etc. It’s all needed! Other needed items are Band-Aids, Kleenex, socks and washcloths.     Family Weekend Library Tour and Special Collections Exhibits, M.D. (tours every 30 min.)  Anderson Library
    Visit M.D. Anderson Library and chat with librarians about the technology, services, and study spaces available to students, and to explore the new Special Collections exhibits. Tours of the building will be offered every half hour staring at 10:00am. Don’t have time for a tour? Stop by the library anytime between 10:00-12:00pm to pick up brochures and free giveaways.

    The University Eye Institute, at the U of H College of Optometry, is located adjacent to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, near the corner of Wheeler and Calhoun, at entrance 2A
    When you visit the University Eye Institute, your student can enter to win an Apple mini “Eye” Pad 2!  You can also learn more about our 4-year professional program, as a future career option for your son or daughter.  In addition, find out about the full range of eye care services that are available at the UEI for your entire family.  Students at the University of Houston have a bright future!  We want them to be able to see it!

    Buildering: Misbehaving the City

    Blaffer Art Museum invites you to take a free, guided tour offered on a drop-in basis of their newest exhibition! Buildering is a term coined for the unsanctioned use of architecture – fusing the words “building” and “bouldering” to describe a rapidly growing movement that reformulates how we live the city. Beyond acrobatics, vandalism and occupation, this practice becomes a metaphor for the creative misuse of built structure - denying the assigned/intended function of urban structures to re-open the possibility of alternatives.

    The Campus Community Garden at the University of Houston teaches students how to garden organically while giving back to the community by providing healthy produce to local food banks. Participants will sample food from the garden, receive a tour and brief history of the garden and have the opportunity to learn the “ins-and-outs” of managing a garden including weeding, planting, seeding and harvesting of the produce.Participants will gain a better understanding of agricultural sustainability and receive some fresh herbs to take home to remember this experience!
