Dr. Rene Bellwied is an experimental nuclear physicist working at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Relativistic Heavy ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. His group is interested in measuring and understanding the formation of visible matter during the early evolution of the Universe. They study the phase transition from a state of free quarks and gluons, called the Quark-Gluon Plasma, to the particles that populate the cosmos now, such as pions, protons and neutrons. By accelerating heavy ions to close to the speed of light, and then letting them collide, we can provide the same energy density that occurred in the Universe only microseconds after the Big Bang. This energy is sufficient to create the Quark-Gluon Plasma state, which was discovered by us at RHIC in 2005. The new, even higher energies achievable at the LHC allow us to study the formation of matter in detail and characterize the deconfined state of quarks and gluons as well.
