University of Houston to Host Mathematics Contest on Feb. 9, 2013
Free Event is Open to Middle and High School Students

The UH Mathematics Contest will be held Feb. 9 at the University of Houston – Central Campus. The contest is completely free of cost and open to all middle school and high school students.

The annual contest consists of Individual Exams, The Smackdown, and the Team Project Competition. Trophies are awarded to the top six students from each individual exam, the top two students in The Smackdown, and the top three Team Projects. First place, second place and third place sweepstakes trophies are awarded to schools based on overall student performance.

Individual Exams are given in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus, AP Physics and calculator usage. Students are eligible to take an individual exam in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or Pre-Calculus provided they are currently enrolled in the associated course. Every student is welcome to take the AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP Calculus, and calculator usage exams.

The Smackdown consists of two rounds: Multiple Choice - Single Elimination, and Speed and Accuracy. Questions come from Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II.

The Team Project will be posted on the contest website by Feb. 1, 2013. Teams (consisting of no more than four students) can work on the project until the day of the contest. The Team Project is due at 8:30 a.m. (during on-site registration) the day of the contest. Each school can enter up to four teams.

At the 2012 contest, 58 schools and nearly 600 students participated. In total, students took over 800 individual exams, 200 students competed in The Smackdown, and 30 teams submitted solutions to the Project Problem.
