Scholarships

The N. Catherine Cominsky Scholarship ($2,500)

This scholarship was personally endowed by the above late faculty member of the former Department of Biology.  It is awarded to undergraduate students majoring in either Biology or Biochemical and Biophysical Sciences.   In order to qualify, students must have achieved junior standing, must have completed at least two regular semesters (fall or spring) in one of the above majors in residence at the University, and must have at least one additional regular semester of study after the award is made.  Criteria for award are 1) academic excellence, as measured by overall grade point average (GPA), GPA in the major, progress toward the degree, and participation in research activities; 2) potential for and demonstrated interest in postgraduate study in biology, biochemistry, or a health profession field; and, 3) participation in department-related activities such as discipline-related student organizations and tutoring.

Two letters of recommendation, at least one which must come from a faculty member whose primary appointment is in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry, are required in addition to a statement from the applicant regarding career goals. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, April 19, 2024 at 5 PM.

The Stutzenberger Undergraduate Research Endowment (SURE) Scholarship ($2,000)

Awarded to an outstanding junior or senior in majoring in either Biology or Biochemistry. The scholarship may be used to purchase supplies for research and/or for travel to a regional or national meeting to present research results via oral or poster presentation. In order to qualify, students must have achieved junior standing, must have completed at least two regular semesters (fall or spring) in one of the above majors in residence at UH, and must have at least one additional regular semester of study after the award is made. Students must submit a two page proposal consisting of a brief introduction, materials and methods, and significance of expected results as a contribution to the scientific field, a proposal budget, as well as a letter from their proposed research advisor, whose primary appointment must be in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry.

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) and the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Alumni Association (NSMAA) also award scholarships to undergraduates. Students may apply for NSM and NSMAA Scholarships online.
