| What
is NSCS? The National Society of Collegiate Scholars was established on the principle that with scholarship comes a responsibility to obtain leadership and a duty to perform service. NSCS @ UH was founded here at the University of Houston with similar principles in mind. For more information on the national organization, see http://www.nscs.org. How did the UH Chapter get started? When Alex Varkey took it upon himself to found NSCS UH, he embarked on a difficult journey. With lots of help from the other founding officers, he began an organization from scratch, in hopes of improving both the university and its students. How is NSCS active at UH? A guiding principle of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is to give back to the community through service. There are many ways to serve the community. You may choose to get involved in Planning for College Success or work with the VP of Community Service to decide in which activities NSCS should participate and with which groups, like Houston's International and Children's Festivals, the March of Dimes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, or the Houston Food Bank Drive. NSCS also recognizes and celebrates high achievement among first and second year college students in all academic disciplines, encourages and promotes high standards throughout the collegiate experience, and provides opportunities for personal growth and leadership development. What projects has NSCS sponsored at UH? Planning for College Success' March to College Day: Since its beginning at the University of Houston, NSCS has done its part in encouraging young people to attend college by bringing middle school students to tour the campus and get a taste of college life. The students are given an opportunity to sit in on lectures and see demonstrations by professors. They also tour the fine facilities at University of Houston, like our new library, fitness and recreation center, the Blaffer Gallery, and the Moore School of Music. We also make sure that each student walks off with a load of goodies provided by campus organizations, local businesses, and our own funds. Last year saw a raffle held with University of Houston gear and Barnes and Noble gift certificates given out as prizes. The students gave wonderful reviews of their field trip, expressing their amazement of what the campus had to offer. The faculty and the chaperones also informed us that the experience was better than they had imagined. What community services has NSCS UH Chapter participated in? Keep in mind that these are only examples of past activities. NSCS @ UH is open to any suggestion you might have regarding service activities. Houston Food Bank: NSCS collects canned goods and non-perishable food items continually for donation to the Houston Food Bank. This year alone NSCS has donated over 150 pounds of food items. Ronald McDonald House: NSCS visits the Ronald McDonald House during the holiday season and makes crafts, plays games, and cooks for the children there. Last year NSCS visited twice, once for Thanksgiving and once near Christmas. Susan G. Komen Foundation: NSCS volunteered at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Run in downtown Houston last year, helping to serve refreshments to participants and give a hand wherever needed. International and Children’s Festivals: NSCS regularly volunteers at local festivals like iFest and the BP Children's Festival. We help sell tickets and work concession stands whose profits go to support the festivals. Oklahoma Book Drive: NSCS members donated and collected children’s books and donated them to Alcott Elementary School in Tulsa, Oklahoma to help out with the shortage their school library was experiencing. _________________________________________________________
