CenterPoint CEO, UH Alum, Honored By American Gas Association

David McClanahan Earned an MBA at UH in 1976

David M. McClanahan, president and CEO of CenterPoint Energy and an alumnus of the University of Houston, has been honored with the 2013 Distinguished Service Award from the American Gas Association (AGA).

“David’s leadership and dedication has played a pivotal role in driving and securing several of AGA’s priority initiatives,” said AGA Chairman Ron Jibson. “It is with great esteem, appreciation and honor that we present this award to David for his service to AGA and our industry.”

McClanahan, who earned his master’s degree in business administration from UH in 1976, has been a member of the AGA board of directors since 2001, serving as chairman of the board in 2008.

He was named president and chief operating officer of Houston Lighting & Power Company, the electric utility predecessor of CenterPoint Energy’s Houston area operations, in 1997. Two years later, he became president and chief operating officer of Reliant Energy Regulated Group and vice chairman of Reliant Energy, positions he held until assuming his current role.

In addition to his service with the American Gas Association, McClanahan serves on the boards of the Greater Houston Partnership, the Edison Electric Institute and the UH Energy Advisory Board. He serves as chairman of the boards of the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and the United Way of Greater Houston.
