Houston Health Department Investigating Tuberculosis Case

University of Houston Statement:
The health and wellbeing of our campus community is our top priority. The University of Houston has received notification from the Houston Health Department (HHD) that a member of the campus community is being treated for tuberculosis. As such, some members of the campus community may have been exposed to TB.

The University is following the protocols outlined by HHD for handling a TB case. HHD is conducting a contact investigation to identify, test and treat individuals who may have been exposed. Email notifications have been sent to those individuals. Individuals who did not receive the notification are not at risk for infection.

We trust the expertise and guidance of HHD as we take appropriate precautions to ensure the public health of our community. HHD will be holding two meetings on campus to educate our community about TB and the routine steps that are being taken to investigate this case. The presentations will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, and 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the Fine Arts, 132D Building -- Dudley Recital Hall.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, TB is rarely spread to persons who spend brief amounts of time together— it requires extensive direct contact with a contagious person who has active TB disease. TB infection can be cured and prevented from progressing to active disease if identified and treated.
