Researchers 'Search for an Anti-Aging Pill' During UH Panel Discussion

March 10 Event Part of Blaffer Art Museum’s Innovation Series

Can a prescribed or over-the-counter medication help stop the clock on gray hair and excess facial lines? Or, are exercise and the right diet the solutions to staying forever young?

Two esteemed researchers will explore the keys to remaining mentally, physically and emotionally fit while advancing in years during a special panel discussion at the University of Houston. “The Search for an Anti-Aging Pill” will be presented at 3 p.m., March 10 in UH’s Student Center Ballroom (room 210 of Student Center South).  This event is presented by Blaffer Art Museum; UH Division of Research; UH Health and Human Performance Program; Baylor College of Medicine’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center and the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston’s John Sealy Center on Aging.

“The Search for an Anti-Aging Pill” is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. For free tickets, visit Blaffer’s ticket site.

Panelists include:

  • Donald Ingram, professor of nutritional neuroscience and aging at Pennington Biomedical Research Center
  • Felipe Sierra, director of Division of Aging Biology, National Institute of Aging
  • Moderated by Dan O’Connor, UH associate professor of health and human performance

Among the discussion points will be a new field of discovery proposed by Ingram --  “calorie restriction mimetics,” which trick the body into thinking that calories have been restricted.    Long-term calorie restriction is associated with a slower rate of aging, thus decreasing the risk of age-related disease and functional impairment.

“The Search for an Anti-Aging Pill” is among the events comprising the Blaffer Art Museum Innovation Series. The series offers insightful discussions and lectures coordinated around Blaffer exhibition “Janet Biggs: Echo of the Unknown.” Biggs’ work is inspired by her memories of the effects of Alzheimer’s on family members.

Blaffer’s UH partners for the series include the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Moores School of Music, School of Theater and Dance, School of Art, Department of Health and Human Performance, Department of Educational Psychology, Department of Philosophy and Department of History; the Cullen College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering; the College of Natural Science & Mathematics’ Department of Biology and Biochemistry and Department of Computer Science; the Honors College; the College of Pharmacy; the University Law Center; and the Division of Research, University of Houston System.
