Rankings Show UH Grads Among Top Earners

UH Recognized by Princeton Review, Business Insider for Producing Grads With Strong Salaries

According to two recent rankings, Coogs emerge from the University of Houston ready for the workforce with skills to help them earn strong salaries.

The Princeton Review and Business Insider listed UH in recent rankings recognizing institutions for producing well-educated alumni that are among top mid-career earners.

The Princeton Review lists UH in its book “Colleges That Pay You Back: The 200 Best Value Colleges and What It Takes to Get In."  In compiling this list of universities, the Princeton Review team reviewed data that included student feedback, alumni salaries and career satisfaction from PayScale.com. It then identified those colleges that ranked highest for academics, affordability and helping students find rewarding careers. Princeton Review’s researchers reviewed data from 650 universities. From those institutions, 200 were selected as those that provided the best value with regard to tuition, financial aid and academics. A list of these universities is available online.

Colleges selected for the book shared this criteria:

  • The average grant to freshmen is $22,600
  • The median starting salary of graduates is $48,700, and the media mid-career salary is $91,300.
  • The percent of alumni reporting “high satisfaction” in their jobs and careers is 71 percent.

“We strongly recommend these schools. They deliver outstanding academics while working to be affordable to students with need — offering generous financial aid or charging a relatively low cost of attendance (or both),” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review's Senior VP/Publisher and lead author of “Colleges That Pay You Back.” “Plus their students graduate with great career prospects.”

UH also is listed in Business Insider’s “50 Most Underrated Colleges in America.” UH ranks fourth on this list of institutions with alums with sound mid-career salaries. Based on Business Insider’s research, UH graduates’ mid-career salary is $82,500. In its profile of the University, Business Inside cites the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Entrepreneurship Program, Cullen College of Engineering and proximity to oil and energy companies’ headquarters as strengths.

Data was compiled by comparing rankings from U.S. News & World Report (Best Universities, Best Liberal Arts Colleges) and PayScale College Salary Report. Universities selected for this list reflect schools whose graduates earn higher salaries than U.S. News academic rankings suggest.
