The shortage of engineers and other technical specialists is a national problem, and it’s especially acute for women. But a female-only engineering camp at the University of Houston hopes to show teens that engineering isn’t all pocket protectors and slide rules.
Students entering eighth through 12th grades will spend the week at GRADE Camp – Girls Reaching and Demonstrating Excellence – learning robotics and programming, meeting with female engineering students and professionals and engaging in other activities on the UH campus. The June 23-27 session is the second and final week of GRADE Camp; both sessions sold out.
Students are required to have completed or be taking appropriate math and science courses for their grade level and have an interest in engineering.

WHEN: Best times for coverage will be Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-noon in various labs, or 1:30-4:30
p.m., while students work with robots they have spent the week building. Robot
demonstrations are 9:30-noon on Friday.

WHO: Female students in 8th-12th grades are encouraged to attend the camp to learn about
