UH Funds Scholarships for Students to Study in China

Agreement with Sias International University Starts in Spring 2015

Five University of Houston (UH) students will have the opportunity to learn abroad in China starting in Spring 2015 thanks to a partnership between the UH Office of Learning Abroad and Sias International University located in Xinzheng City, Henan Province. China

“The UH Office of Learning Abroad agreed in a scholarship proposal with Sais International University to provide up to $2,390 in direct support of cost-sharing intended to cover airfare, housing and incidentals,” said Jaime Ortiz, vice provost of Global Strategies and Studies in Academic Affairs at UH. “UH will receive five scholarships to learn abroad in China as early as Spring 2015 either for one full semester or one full academic year.”

UH is among 200 commitment partners selected to participate in Generation Study Abroad, a five-year initiative of the Institute of International Education (IIE), to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad.

“China is the world’s largest emerging economy, America’s second largest trading partner and a vital partner in Pacific Rim politics,” said Ortiz. “While many students majoring and minoring in Chinese Studies have the opportunity to participate in faculty-led learning abroad programs to China for a short term. The UH Office of Learning Abroad is seeing trends where students are seeking internships and longer programs in China.”

Recruiting efforts for the scholarship will begin with the UH College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, where there is a good fit for students in the Chinese Studies program to satisfy part of their degree requirement abroad, and the C.T. Bauer College of Business, and Graduate College of Social Work to specifically target students looking to satisfy liberal arts requirements for their UH core curriculum, minors, or elective credits. These scholarships are open to any UH student interested in studying at Sias International University in China this spring.  SAIS

“We anticipate more opportunities such as this will be forthcoming as the Office of Learning Aboard and the Generation Study Abroad commitment becomes more visible in the new few years,” said Paula Myrick Short, senior vice president for Academic Affairs and provost at UH.
