UH Celebrating Start of Academic Year During 2014 Fall Convocation

UHS Board of Regents Chair Jarvis V. Hollingsworth to Address Community Sept. 4

Fall is a time of transition. The season is marked by the changing colors of foliage, cooler temperatures and of course, the beginning of a new academic year. For both freshmen and seniors, the fall semester signifies new chapters in their lives. While some students are enteringJarvis Hollingsworth the new world of a university, others soon will depart campus and embark on new adventures.

The University of Houston’s Honors College will celebrate this special time during the Fall Convocation on Sept. 4 in UH’s Moores Opera House (Entrance 16 off Cullen Boulevard). And it is indeed a time for the Honors College to celebrate, as it welcomes more than 2,000 students – a college first.

This year’s keynote speaker is UH System Board of Regents Chair Jarvis V. Hollingsworth. Other special guests include UH President Renu Khator and Paula Short, UH senior vice president of Academic Affairs and Provost.

The Fall Convocation is free and open to the community. A dessert reception begins at 6 p.m., and the Convocation program starts at 7 p.m. Following the event, the Honors College will host an Alumni Reception at The Den Campus Pub (4835 Calhoun Rd.).

An alumnus of the UH Law Center, Hollingsworth was appointed to the UH System Board of Regents in 2009. In 2013, he was elected as the Board’s chair. Hollingsworth is a partner in the Houston office of the law firm Bracewell & Giuliani, LLP, and has been repeatedly named a “Texas Super Lawyer” by Texas Monthly magazine. He is a member of the National Association of Securities Professionals New York’s Wall Street Hall of Fame, and in 2006, Black Enterprise magazine named Hollingsworth one of the “75 Most Powerful Blacks on Wall Street.” He has received honors from the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Lawyer magazine, the Houston Bar Association, the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and the NAACP. He was a 2007 recipient of the UH Black Alumni Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award and the 2006 recipient of the UH Law Alumni Association's Private Sector Achievement Award. Hollingsworth previously served as a director of the UH System Alumni Organization. A former captain in the U.S. Army, Hollingsworth received a Meritorious Service Medal for his service. He received his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Hollingsworth, a native of Fayette, Ala., and his wife Andrea have three children.
