UH Hosts Media Panel on 'The Role of the Media in Preventing Another Sept. 11'

The University of Houston (UH) will host a panel discussion, “The Role of the Media in Preventing Another Sept. 11,” at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12 in the UH Hilton Hotel Plaza Room.

Panelists include:

Garth Jowett, professor of communication at UH, is an expert in propaganda and co-author of the book, “Propaganda and Persuasion,” the most widely used book in academic propaganda studies. His area of research and teaching include: the history of communications and popular culture, propaganda studies, and the role of media in modern society. His publications include, “Film: The Democratic Art”, “Movies As Mass Communication”, and “Children and the Movies: Media Influence and the Payne Fund Studies.”

Ryan Kennedy, an assistant professor of political science at UH, is an expert on terrorism. He can address the history of terrorism, theories of terrorist violence, policy responses to terrorist acts and the evolution of Al Qaeda before and after 9/11. His commentaries on terrorism have been featured in national and local media outlets.

Don Clark served in the FBI for 25 years, during which he was agent in charge of the FBI’s criminal division in New York, agent in charge of the San Antonio FBI, and the agent in charge of the Houston division. He supervised numerous high-profile FBI investigations. He currently is employed at the Law Firm of O’Quinn, Laminack & Pirtle and works for Fox 26 TV and CNN as an on-air analyst for law enforcement and security issues.

Abdülhamit Bilici, general manager of Cihan News Agency, is a columnist for Zaman and Today's Zaman newspapers. He served as the deputy editor in chief of Zaman daily, the largest circulated paper in Turkey. He also worked as the foreign news editor of Zaman and Aksiyon weekly news magazine. He writes mainly on Turkish foreign policy and world politics and appears on national and international TV programs to comment on political developments in Turkey. He edited the book “Why Turkey?” which focuses on understanding different perspectives on Turkish-EU relations.

The symposium is sponsored by UH’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in collaboration with the Raindrop Turkish House.
