"We are honored to host Dr. Butler who has been the leading and most respected voice on aging," said Ira Colby, professor and dean of the college. "He predicted the current challenges associated with the graying of America. We are eager to hear his thoughts on the future."
Butler, who is the founding director of the National Institute on Aging and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Why Survive? Being Old in America," will address the benefits and challenge of living a long life. He coined the term ‘ageism' to describe discrimination based on age and predicted the impact of aging on America.
The event is co-sponsored by the GCSW, the Houston Gerontological Society and St. Joseph Medical Center. Each year, the Houston Gerontological Society presents the R.J. DeBottis educational lecture, which funds scholarships for students in the GCSW who are preparing to serve the aging community in their professional careers.
