Famed Researcher, Author Distinguished Lecturer at UH

Pioneer gerontology researcher and author Dr. Robert Butler is the featured speaker at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work's (GCSW) 12th annual DeBottis and Lecture in Aging.

The event is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the George W. Strake Building in St. Joseph Medical Center. The public is invited to attend. For ticket information call 832-605-4522 or 713-743-3599.

"We are honored to host Dr. Butler who has been the leading and most respected voice on aging," said Ira Colby, professor and dean of the college. "He predicted the current challenges associated with the graying of America. We are eager to hear his thoughts on the future."

Butler, who is the founding director of the National Institute on Aging and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Why Survive? Being Old in America," will address the benefits and challenge of living a long life. He coined the term ‘ageism' to describe discrimination based on age and predicted the impact of aging on America.

The event is co-sponsored by the GCSW, the Houston Gerontological Society and St. Joseph Medical Center. Each year, the Houston Gerontological Society presents the R.J. DeBottis educational lecture, which funds scholarships for students in the GCSW who are preparing to serve the aging community in their professional careers.

St. Joseph Medical Center is a 345-bed nonprofit, regional medical center and a member of Catholic Health Initiatives. Founded in 1864 by the Sisters of St. Francis, St. Joseph has been recognized by "U.S. News & World Report" as one of America's best orthopaedic facilities and is a nationally ranked Top 100 heart hospital.

Continuing Education credits are available. Seating is limited. Please RSVP by Oct. 10 to Brennan Kraut, 832-605-4522, or by mail to HGS DeBottis Scholarship, 3901 Arnold St., Houston 77005. Make checks payable to HGS R. J. DeBottis Scholarship Fund.

Butler's Houston appearance is thanks to the generosity of the Isla Carroll Turner Friendship Trust, a Houston foundation devoted to the support of study and research in the field of gerontology.
