New Program to Assist UH Law Grads

May 4, 2009 - Houston - The University of Houston Law Center has launched a $500,000 program to assist its newest graduates through the ongoing economic downturn.

The program primarily focuses on the three months that new law graduates spend waiting for results of the bar exam.

"The ongoing economic crisis has affected the job markets in every profession, including law. We are taking this proactive step to help ensure that our class of 2009 weathers the current environment in the best possible shape," said Dean Ray Nimmer.

The New Graduates Assistance Program provides stipends for new graduates who are selected for Public Interest Fellowships or for legal research fellowships that assist Law Center faculty with ongoing research projects.

Members of the 2009 class can also receive scholarships to cover 50 percent of the cost of one semester of the Law Center's LL.M. program, and they can attend specialized Law Center classes and CLE programs without cost.

"One of the hallmarks of a great school is the way it supports its graduates. We are a great school that is doing everything it can to ensure the success of the class of 2009," Nimmer said.

Details on the complete program are available at www.law.uh.edu/career/newgrads.pdf.
