University of Houston experts, including Peter Bishop, director of graduate futures studies program, are prepared to comment on the topics related to hurricane season preparation and response.
The Joseph Vail Immigration Workshop will take place from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 18 at the UHLC's Krost Hall. Admission and parking are free.
"Our work at the Immigration Clinic has traditionally been focused on the needs of individual clients," said Anne Chandler, the clinic's interim director. "But, with this workshop we hope to perform outreach to a wider community in metropolitan Houston. We have scheduled sessions that will answer questions of employers, school administrators and many other individuals touched by immigration law."
The keynote address will be delivered by Rick Noriega, former U.S. Senate candidate in 2008 and current vice president of community initiatives at Neighborhood Centers.
The workshop will feature 17 one-hour sessions on topics such as employment immigration issues, children and education and obtaining and maintaining legal status. There also will be a session on immigration law problems faced by university students. Classes will be offered in English and Spanish. There will be a class offered in Mandarin and one in Vietnamese. Each session will be facilitated by prominent members of the Houston immigration bar.
The workshop is named for the late Joseph Vail, a UHLC professor, attorney and former immigration law judge whose passion for the rights of immigrants prompted him to found the UHLC Immigration Law Clinic in 1999. He passed away in 2008 and was posthumously awarded National Immigration Project Carol King Award by the National Lawyers Guild.
