UH Hosts Panel Discussion at Offshore Technology Conference

The University of Houston’s success in working with the energy industry to establish its popular undergraduate petroleum engineering program will be the focus of a panel discussion next week at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

The discussion will be held Tuesday (May 7) from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Reliant Center. The panelists will talk about a recent study by the Business Higher Education Forum that highlighted UH’s undergraduate petroleum engineering program as a model partnership between industry and academia.

UH, which has long had a successful master’s program in petroleum engineering, started its undergraduate program in 2009 with significant support and input from the energy industry. The program is designed to fill gaps in the industry’s aging workforce and give graduates the skills they need in the evolving energy world.

The program started out with about 20 students and has since grown to more than 400 students this spring semester.

Ramanan Krishnamoorti, UH’s chief energy officer, will be the moderator. The panelists are: Ron Harrell, chairman emeritus of Ryder Scott Company;  Ali Daneshy, president of Daneshy Consultants International;  Tom Holley, director of UH’s petroleum engineering program, and Tim Deines, petroleum engineering manager-technology for Marathon Oil Corp.

The group will discuss their involvement in the development of the program and answer questions from the audience.
