UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATION OFFICE AT UH EXPANDS
Richard Bonnin Named Assistant Director,
Ann Holdsworth to Focus on Science and Research

The University of Houston Communications Office recently hired a new assistant director and a media relations representative who will assist in representing the university’s science, technology and research to the media.

Richard Bonnin, former internal communications coordinator for The University of Texas at Austin, fills the assistant director position. He is responsible for assisting the director of University Communication in the management of the external and internal communication programs, providing supervisory support and production oversight while serving as a contributing writer and media relations representative.

“Richard is a seasoned professional whose experience will be invaluable in helping us keep the media, the public and our own campus community informed about the university,” said Eric Gerber, director of University Communication.

Bonnin has 25 years of experience in print journalism and public relations, including eight years as a reporter with the Beaumont Enterprise in Southeast Texas. Bonnin joined UT Austin in 1990 as a writer in the Office of Public Affairs and was named publications editor a year later. He was appointed as coordinator for internal communications in 2001.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with a talented team of professionals in University Communication,” Bonnin said. “The University of Houston continues to grow in size and stature. There are great stories to tell about the teaching, research and public service going on here. I look forward to contributing to that effort.”
Bonnin has a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Lamar University. He can be reached at 713-743-8155 or 281-840-9820. His email address is rbonnin@uh.edu.

Ann Holdsworth, a former writer and editor with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, joins the external communications team as a media relations representative and will be partnering with senior science writer Lisa Merkl to cover the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Cullen College of Engineering, College of Pharmacy, College of Optometry, College of Technology and Division of Research.

“Since I’m a Houston native, helping promote my hometown university is very rewarding,” Holdsworth said. “I look forward to working with staff, professors and students to get the word out on what this university has to offer.”

Holdsworth has seven years of experience with print and broadcast journalism, including working with KXAN News 36, the Austin NBC affiliate; KUT 90.5, the Austin NPR affiliate; and 91.7 FM KVRX in Austin. While working for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, Holdsworth was a staff writer for award-winning publication, Fiscal Notes, and editor for the award-winning Texas Innovator and Window on Texas Local Government.

Holdsworth has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin and master’s degree in political science from the University of California, Riverside. Holdsworth can be reached at 713-743-8153 or
832-387-9322. Her e-mail address is aholdsworth@uh.edu.
