ALL ABOARD: ‘STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE’ ROLLS INTO UH

Few 20th century stage productions have ascended to the iconic status of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Since its debut in 1947, the gripping tale of three characters on an emotional collision course has intrigued theater-goers. Now, the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance presents Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning classic.

The play will run Feb. 16 -17 and 23- 25 in the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre located in the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at UH.

The play tells the story of fading southern belle Blanche DuBois, who visits her sister Stella in New Orleans. Blanche’s yearning for the once romantic, magical South is in stark contrast to the simplistic, working class lifestyle represented by Stella’s oppressive husband, Stanley Kowalski. The clash between Blanche’s escapist fantasies and Stanley’s often brutish demeanor begins to boil. Meanwhile, Stella must contend with the oncoming consequences of this conflict.

“This play places volatile characters in a confined environment,” said Brian Byrnes, the play’s director and associate professor of theater. “This creates the tension, the drama and the powder keg of what the play becomes.”

The New Orleans setting is enhanced by a set that Byrnes says captures the decrepit feel of the Kowalskis’ meager living space but still offers a spectacular backdrop for these characters.

“It’s a very dramatic set,” he said. “The story takes place off the French Quarter in the shabbier part of town, but this set presents a wonderful cityscape that extends beyond the playing space itself.”

General admission tickets are $15; $12 for UH faculty, staff and alumni; $10 for seniors or groups of 10 or more; and $7 for students. Ticket information can be obtained by calling the Wortham Theatre box office at 713-743-2929.
