LEARNING, FUN AT CORE OF ROBOTICS COMPETITION AT UH

On the silver screen, robots have taken audiences to new and different worlds. In real life, they’re taking middle school students on exciting journeys of scientific discovery.

Thanks to the University of Houston’s College of Technology and NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), many Texas students are able to begin their knowledge quests during a robotics competition that’s as entertaining as it is educational .

On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Coordination of Robotics Education (CORE) – a partnership between the college and JSC – will host the Lone Star FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Tournament. During this event, teams of middle school students will design and build robots using LEGO Mindstorm technology, a robotics system designed by the LEGO Group.

“Robotics shows kids that science and technology are viable paths for higher levels of study and for careers,” said Farrokh Attarzadeh, associate professor of engineering technology. “If we want to build a strong technical workforce for the future, we must encourage today’s children to follow these paths from a very early age.”

The event is free and open to the public. More than 80 teams are expected to compete for the chance to advance to the national FLL Robotics Championship. For additional tournament information, contact Karen Cohen, Tournament Director at 713-743-1855 or kcohen2@uh.edu. Event and volunteer information is available on the CORE Web site at http://core.tech.uh.edu/.

CORE provides robotics tournaments, workshops, training seminars and other outreach initiatives to students of all academic levels. FIRST LEGO League is one of many programs presented by CORE. Additional CORE robotics education and outreach programs are posted on the CORE website.
