‘SPEED RECRUITMENT’ AT UH CONFERENCE KEEPS JOB-SEEKERS ON THEIR TOES

In today’s global economy, college graduates must actively manage their careers and update their skills to keep their hard-earned degrees from becoming obsolete.

That’s why the Houston Alumni Organization and the University of Houston’s C.T. Bauer College of Business have partnered with seasonedPRO, a producer of career events, to produce a two-day Alumni/Professional Recruitment and Career Management Conference Nov. 17-18.

“At a certain point in your career, standing in line at a career fair booth is no longer useful, and most ‘networking’ events are too unstructured to help you connect quickly and easily with potential employers,” said Jamie K. Belinne, executive director of the Bauer College’s Elizabeth Rockwell Career Services Center. “This event caters to experienced professionals and the employers who want to hire them through the ‘speed recruitment’ format.”

During the “speed recruitment” sessions, attendees will talk with potential employers every half-hour in executive roundtable meetings. Some of the featured employers will include Oracle, Sysco, UHY Tax/Accounting, FMC Technologies, BMC Software, Manhattan Resources, INTEC Engineering and Ergos Technology.

Richard Bolles, author of the best-selling career management and job search book “What Color Is Your Parachute,” will deliver the keynote presentation, “How to Make Career-Transition and Work-Life Decisions.” Bolles will discuss how the brain works when making decisions and ways that job-seekers can apply those findings.

The conference will also feature “breakout sessions” on topics such as “Effective Networking: Getting to the Right People,” presented by Eli Jones, executive director of the Sales Excellence Institute and the Program for Excellence in Selling at the Bauer College. Other scheduled topics include “Personal Branding as a Career Advancement Tool” and “Boom or Bust! New Career Strategies in a New America.”

While the conference is primarily for UH alumni, community members are welcome to attend as well. Attendees can register for one or both days of the conference. Discounted registration options are available for HAO members, UH students and those who register before Nov. 2.
