EMERGING WRITERS’ VOICES SHOWCASED AT UH’S POETRY & PROSE

Houston literary audiences will have a chance to sample the breadth of student talent in the University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program (CWP) during the next edition of UH’s Poetry & Prose Reading Series.

Four first-year CWP students were chosen by the program’s faculty to share their work during the readings, which begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the M.D. Anderson Library’s Honors College Commons. The event is free and open to the public.

“These readings allow the community to be introduced to the incoming graduate creative writing class,” said J. Kastely, director of CWP.

Poets Hayan Charara and Stacey Higdon and fiction writers Russel Swensen and Coert Voorhees are scheduled to read at the event.

Each year, four new students are selected to read original works at the November edition of Poetry & Prose. Students are chosen based on the variety of their writing styles to effectively represent CWP’s poets and fiction writers.

“Poetry and Prose helps show the continuing vitality and diversity of the program,” Kastely said. “Plus, it is a great chance to hear writers who will help create the future national literary culture.”

The Poetry & Prose Reading Series is coordinated by UH Libraries with cooperation from CWP and The Honors College.
