CHAMPION TECHNOLOGIES PLEDGES $150K FOR NEW UHSSL SCIENCE LAB
CTI Gift Will Help Expand UHSSL’s Science Programming, Research Efforts

HOUSTON, June 27, 2006 – Champion Technologies, Inc., (CTI) has pledged $150,000 to the University of Houston System at Sugar Land (UHSSL) expansion project.

In recognition of the gift, one of the two large science laboratories at the Sugar Land campus will bear the CTI name. The lab will be housed in the new 145,000-square-foot building to be shared with Wharton County Junior College.

Champion Technologies’ worldwide headquarters is in Houston and its Research and Development center is in Fresno, Texas (in Fort Bend County).

John W. “Johnny” Johnson, chairman of the executive committee at Champion Technologies, announced the gift June 5 at Pecan Grove Country Club with UH-Victoria President Tim Hudson and CTI Community Relations Manager Nell Ciancarelli.

“Champion’s support of the University of Houston System’s project in Fort Bend County is much like a three-legged stool,” Johnson said. “The first and second legs are the facts that the UH is a terrific resource for our communities, region and state and that Fort Bend County is as dynamic a place as there is to live, work and play. The third leg is that Champion Technologies’ main focus is chemistry, and CTI wants to expose young people to more learning opportunities and possibly even a career in the sciences.”

Both UHSSL and Wharton County Junior College plan to expand their science programming and research when the new building is completed.

“We are truly grateful to CTI for recognizing the importance of partnerships between higher education and industry,” UH-Victoria President Tim Hudson said. “This gift will undoubtedly help to sustain the cutting-edge research already being conducted by our faculty and students in the sciences and help to prepare our students for careers in such facilities as CTI.”

A total of 66 new classrooms of various sizes are projected for the new building, as well as a performance hall/auditorium, computer labs, science laboratories and nursing skills laboratories. The new classrooms will provide seating for approximately 2,500 students. The building will also provide faculty offices, a bookstore, weight rooms, a student lounge, and a food court. The current facility, the Albert and Mamie George Building, will serve as an instructional site and as the administrative headquarters for UHSSL and WCJC.

The new $35 million building will be funded through private and public funds, including $22.9 million in Tuition Revenue Bonds recently approved by the Texas Legislature. Private funding from the George Foundation and others has topped $5.1 million, and the City of Sugar Land has committed $3.5 million in a long-term lease agreement.
