WHITE HOUSE COUNSEL HARRIET MIERS TO SPEAK
AT UH LAW CENTER GRADUATION
White House counsel Harriet Miers will serve as the keynote speaker
at the University of Houston Law Center’s commencement ceremonies
May 12.
“Being a good lawyer is in part science, but in large measure
an art form,” Miers wrote in a 1993 column for the Texas Bar
Journal. “A recognition of these facts and a recollection
of some of the purposes and dreams many had in law school can produce
better lawyers and happier, more satisfied individuals.”
Miers was recently nominated to fill a Supreme Court vacancy, but
subsequently withdrew under mounting criticism. Prior to President
Bush’s nomination, Miers led a successful career in local
and statewide politics. In 1992, she became the first woman elected
president of the State Bar of Texas, where she served from 1992
to 1993. Other positions held in Texas include an at-large member
of Dallas City Council, chairwoman of the Texas Lottery Commission,
and general counsel for the transition team of Governor-elect George
W. Bush.
In 2001, Miers began her role in Washington, D.C. as assistant
to President Bush and staff secretary. Two years later, she was
promoted to deputy chief of staff where she served as counsel to
the president since February 2005. She has also been named one of
the nation’s top 50 woman lawyers.
Miers is scheduled to deliver the commencement speech at 2 p.m.
Friday, May 12 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
