TWO HOUSTON PREMIERES KICK OFF 2006 FOR UH’S MOORES OPERA CENTER

The University of Houston’s Edythe Bates Old Moores Opera Center typically kicks off its Winter Repertory with two operas. This year is no different, but it will up the ante by staging two Houston premieres.

Jonathan Dove’s “Flight” will make both its Houston debut and its first-ever performance at a university at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26. Gioachino Rossini’s “The Turk in Italy” will arrive in town at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27. Three performances of each production will be performed in Moores Opera House and are open to the public.

“UH is the first school or university in the world to attempt ‘Flight’ ,” said Buck Ross, director of the Moores Opera Center. “This is a very hot production in the opera world, and we are excited about bringing it to Houston opera lovers.”

The story of “Flight” hovers around a group of travelers stranded at an airport following an electrical storm while comic romance and a clash of cultures are at the heart of “The Turk in Italy.”

Since its 1998 debut in Britain’s famed Glyndebourne opera house, “Flight” has dazzled audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with its innovative approach to contemporary opera. “The Turk in Italy” was first staged nearly two centuries earlier in 1816 on a stage at La Scala in Milan, and has a devoted following.

“Both of these pieces are very humorous,” Ross said. “Audiences will appreciate both operas’ fantastic scores as well as their high levels of energy.”

“Flight” will be performed in English with surtitles, and “The Turk in Italy” will be performed in Italian with English surtitles.
