INTERNATIONAL PIANO FEST AT UH OFFERS A CHANCE TO LISTEN AND LEARN

For three days in January, classical music aficionados and students can listen to and learn from four of the world’s most gifted pianists during the University of Houston’s 23rd annual International Piano Festival (IPF).

The festival runs Friday through Sunday, Jan. 20-22, at UH and will feature performances and master classes from Marc-Andrè Hamelin, Alexei Lubimov, Nelita True and Abbey Simon. Performances and master classes are open to the public.

(Note: Due to an injury, Simon has been forced to withdraw from his recital, but is still tentatively scheduled to conduct his master classes. Anton Nel, Distinguished Professor of Piano at UT-Austin, will perform the Friday evening concert.)

Hamelin is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec. He has recorded several albums for Hyperion Records and has performed with orchestras around the world. Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov attended the Moscow Conservatory and was one of the last students of famed musician and teacher Heinrich Neuhaus. He has performed at a host of festivals as a soloist and alongside top orchestras. True has taken her talents to concert halls around the globe including Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Brazil and Australia and teaches at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music.

Simon, UH’ s Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished Professor of Music, is one of the most recorded classical artists of all time and has been honored with numerous awards including the National Orchestral Award. He has performed with symphonies worldwide and has served as a UH faculty member since 1977. He founded the festival in 1984.

“I am looking forward to the recitals by the festival’s fine roster of artists and the opportunity of hearing UH students in my master class,” True said.

IPF events will be held at UH except for Hamelin’s Jan. 21 recital, which will be performed at the Wortham Center’s Cullen Theater at 500 Texas Ave. in downtown Houston. For a complete schedule, event locations and ticket prices, visit http://www.music.uh.edu/pianofestival/ or call 713-743-3313.
