DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ARRIVES AT UH
FOR FIRST HOUSTON CONCERT IN 56 YEARS

It took more than half a century for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) to return to Houston, but thanks to the University of Houston, it will soon bring its celebrated sounds back to town.

DSO is accustomed to performing internationally, but it will soon embark on a rare tour of the Lone Star state including a Nov. 18 performance at UH’s Moores Opera House. This concert will be a homecoming for a few of its members, who graduated from the university’s Moores School of Music (MSM).

“We're pleased about the DSO and MSM connections,” said David Ashley White, director of MSM. “DSO concertmaster Emanuel Borok is a member of our violin faculty. And Scott Walzel, second bassoon, and Russell Campbell, associate principal trumpet, are MSM alumni.”

Houston audiences will be treated to two guest artists performing with DSO: guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero and 12-year-old violin prodigy Shannon Lee.

Guerrero is currently the music director of the Eugene Symphony in Oregon and has appeared with top orchestras around the United States. In 2004, he received the Helen M. Thompson Award by the American Symphony Orchestra League, which recognizes outstanding young music directors and orchestra managers.

Lee has already begun earning acclaim for her talents. In 2004, she received DSO’s Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition and recently, she was a featured performer on the radio program “From the Top.” She will soon make her Carnegie Hall debut at the 2006 Fiddlefest and will accompany famed maestro Christof Perick on a European tour.

“We're proud to present DSO in its first Houston appearance in since 1949,” White said. “Houstonians are very proud of the Houston Symphony, and now they will get the opportunity to hear firsthand the fine music that Dallas also has to offer.”

This performance is open to the public. Tickets are $25 and $15 for students and seniors. For more information, call 713-743-3313 or visit http://www.music.uh.edu/events/index.html#info.
