KINESIOLOGY DOCTORAL PROGRAM AT UH AMONG
THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY
New Health and Human Performance Program Scores Well Against Established
Programs
HOUSTON, October 25, 2005—The doctoral program of the University
of Houston’s Health and Human Performance Department was rated
in the top 20 of such programs in the country by the American Academy
of Kinesiology and Physical Education. This is the first time the
UH kinesiology doctoral program has been rated against other programs
nationwide.
“For a program that didn’t exist five years ago, this
is an extraordinary accomplishment,” Charles S. Layne, UH
professor and department chair, said. “This acknowledgement
is a tribute to the faculty, staff and students in Health and Human
Performance.”
The UH doctoral program in kinesiology was established in 2000
to enhance the growing health and human performance department.
The program currently focuses on three broad areas of kinesiology:
motor behavior, physiology and socio-cultural influences on physical
activity and obesity. Since the program’s inception, more
than 30 students have enrolled. A faculty of 10 oversees students’
progress. Many professors currently have research collaborations
with NASA and Texas Medical Center research initiatives. Most students
go on to work professionally in research, education or related fields.
“We believe our cross-disciplinary, integrated approach to
doctoral education in the area of health-related issues makes us
a unique program,” Layne said. “We are pleased to see
the Academy recognized our accomplishments.”
Programs were rated on the number of professors on faculty, their
published articles, edited books, scholarly presentations, grant
money received and professional memberships. Reviewers also rated
student GRE scores, the number of applicants and the number graduates
in professional positions.
The program was rated 15 in a survey that ranked thirty-two kinesiology
programs.
