A little jazz, a touch of opera, a bit of chamber music. These are just some of the sounds that will make up “Collage,” the fall kickoff concert for the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music (MSM). “Collage” will open MSM’s fall concert season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 in the Moores Opera House with a generous sampling of its multifaceted programs including the Spirit of Houston Marching Band, the UH Jazz Ensemble, the Edythe Bates Old Moores Opera Center and Moores Symphony Orchestra. Ensembles and soloists will perform short arrangements and preview compositions that will be showcased during the concert season. Although "Collage" is free and open to the public, representatives from the American Red Cross will be in attendance to collect donations for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. “This is the only time of the year when all of our programs unite for a performance,” said Buck Ross, director of the Moores Opera Center and the concert’s coordinator. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear the range of MSM’s talent.” Although hundreds of musicians are involved in “Collage,” the concert flows seamlessly from one performance to the next. Ross credits the show’s professionalism to the faculty and students involved. “After only two weeks of classes, it’s an amazing feat to get the show off the ground,” he said. “The discipline and patience of our musicians eases all logistical challenges.” UH’s “Collage” was conceived by Franz Krager, UH director of orchestras. The inspiration for a season opener that combines all of MSM’s talents came from observing similar-minded productions at other universities. Now in its seventh year, “Collage” has become one of the most anticipated events on MSM’s concert schedule. “It’s a tremendous concert for both the musicians and the audience,” said David Ashley White, director of MSM. “When so many wonderful faculty and student performers can share the stage on one night, the result is magical.”
