NEW ‘PETER AND THE WOLF’ TWICE
AS NICE AT UH’S CHILDREN’S THEATRE FESTIVAL
Leave it to the creative minds at the University of Houston’s
Children’s Theatre Festival (CTF) to put another unique spin
on a classic story.
When CTF’s original adaptation of “Peter and the Wolf”
premieres on Wednesday, July 13, audiences will be treated to two
versions of Sergei Prokofiev’s timeless musical composition
and tale.
The first half of the performance remains faithful to Prokofiev’s
production with music and narration telling the story of a boy and
his animal friends hunting a menacing wolf. Then, the second part
of the performance transplants the setting to a modern day playground
where Peter and his buddies confront a neighborhood bully.
“Prokofiev's music is brilliant and the characters are wonderful,”
said Brian Byrnes, associate professor of theater and the play’s
writer and director. “‘Peter and the Wolf’ is
great storytelling that continues to inspire children and parents
alike."
The final two performances will feature performers from Illuminations…Theatre
with the Deaf, who will act as shadows for the actors and interpret
the play for hearing impaired audience members.
Sidney Berger, director of UH’s School of Theatre, and Bren
Dubay founded CTF in 1978. Each year, more than 25,000 theater-goers
delight in these colorful productions that feature professional
casts and crews.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for children 14 and under. For
