TEXAS MUSIC FESTIVAL AT UH A TREAT FOR FANS,
A TREASURE FOR STUDENT MUSICIANS

For four weeks this summer, the University of Houston will be alive with the sound of music.

The 2005 Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival (TMF) offers students a chance to polish their performance skills under the supervision of professional musicians at UH’s Moores School of Music (MSM). It also provides music aficionados with a wealth of entertaining concerts and recitals from some of the world’s brightest young musicians.

In 1990, Houston arts patrons Immanuel and Helen Olshan founded the festival as a four-week orchestral fellowship program dedicated to developing the talents of student musicians. Since then, TMF has attracted students from around the globe and entertained local audiences with performances ranging from chamber music to jazz.

“Very few universities are able to present a summer music festival of the caliber of our Texas Music Festival,” said David Ashley White, director of MSM. “It offers an outstanding orchestral training program for young musicians.”

Overseeing the festival’s clinics and classes are MSM’s distinguished musicians and faculty, members of the Houston Symphony and internationally recognized artists including conductor Marek Pijarowski and violinist Lucie Robert. Students are accepted to the festival based on live and taped auditions.

Components of the 2005 TMF include the “Classical Minds” Guitar Festival, High School and College Jazz Institute, High School Piano Institute and “Floot Fire,” a workshop for flutists.

Ticket prices for the performances vary; some are free to the public. For ticket information, call the Moores box office at (713) 743-3313.
