HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FIND RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
AT UH HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT SUMMER CAMPS
The University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and
Restaurant Management is cooking up an educational summer experience
for high school students interested in hospitality industry careers.
Two instructional summer camps for high school seniors will give
students hands on experience with cooking, event planning and hospitality
management.
The first summer camp session is for Houston area seniors, June
27-29. The second is for those who live outside the Houston area
and is set for July 19-23.
Students will meet with industry executives, receive training with
the college’s instructors and prepare gourmet meals under
the guidance of the Hilton College’s Executive Chef Abbas
Jaffari. In addition, students will tour Houston hotels and sports
stadiums, including Minute Maid Park.
Director of Enrollment Danny Arocha says an added goal is to recruit
students to the college. Arocha says about
15 percent of the college’s students are from outside the
Houston area. As a recruiter, Arocha says he has goals of increasing
that number to 50 percent. The college attracts about 900 students
each year.
“We would really like to increase diversity at the college,”
he said, “not just ethnically, but regionally as well.”
The second camp in July will be one of the steps toward achieving
that diversity, Arocha said, with students from as far away as New
Jersey, Las Vegas and California in attendance. Arocha expects about
15 students for each camp, and, while he looks forward to the camps’
growth in future years, he says the camp sizes likely will not exceed
25 students each.
