PIANO MASTERS CONVERGE ON UH FOR UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The 2005 International Piano Festival offers a triple treat: three days of recitals and classes from three of the world’s foremost masters of the instrument.

The festival, which is underwritten in part by the RSMIS Foundation of Houston, runs Friday, Feb. 4 – Sunday, Feb. 6 at the University of Houston’s Moores Opera House. Arnaldo Cohen, Antonio Pompa-Baldi and Abbey Simon will perform recitals, conduct master classes and discuss music during an artists conversation luncheon.

“This is the 22nd year of this unique event,” said David Ashley White, director of UH’s Moores School of Music (MSM). “I know of nothing else quite like it, and certainly, no university does anything similar.”

Brazilian pianist Cohen performed his first U.S. solo recital at UH in 1991and is eager to return to campus.

“Performing here is an emotional event,” Cohen said. “It is with great joy that I return to this wonderful university.”

Italian Pompa-Baldi has been featured on National Public Radio and alongside orchestras such as the Boston Pops.

Simon, the festival’s founder and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished Professor of Music, has recorded performances for Phillips, EMI and Vox labels and teamed with prolific orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recitals are $25 and $15 for students and seniors. Artists luncheon admission is $15 and includes a meal. Master classes are $10 and $5 for students and seniors.
