PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: UH EXPERIENCES WHEELCHAIR
CHALLENGES
THROUGH CAMPUS TOUR, HOOPS TOURNAMENT
A group of University of Houston faculty, staff
and students will learn what it’s like to navigate in a
wheelchair.
Participants will tour the campus and play in a basketball tournament
as part of DisAbility Awareness Week (DAW) Thursday, Oct. 28. The
events are sponsored by UH’s Justin Dart, Jr. Center for Students
with DisABILITIES (CSD).
Three simultaneous campus accessibility tours, led by students
with visual or mobile impairments, will take place from 10 a.m.
to noon, starting at the CSD and ending at the Campus Recreation
and Wellness Center. The group, consisting of administration members,
faculty, staff and students, will take the tour using wheelchairs
to gain a better understanding of traveling the campus without the
ability to walk.
Additionally, a wheelchair challenge basketball tournament will
take place at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center from 6 to
9 p.m. The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) Sports
Hotwheels, a team of players ages 18 and under, the Houston Rolling
Cougars, a team with experience in a league of wheelchair users,
and various sorority and fraternity teams will compete for $500
worth of gift certificates to Best Buy.
American Medical, Texas Medical and Mobility, and TIRR are providing
the wheelchairs to those not usually requiring a wheelchair.
“Though the UH campus is relatively wheelchair accessible,
there are always improvements to be made,” said Cheryl Amoruso,
director of Justin Dart, Jr. Center for Students with DisABILITIES.
“Through the week’s events, bigger problems can be addressed.”
