Terrie Sultan, Director of Blaffer Gallery at UH

Terrie Sultan has served as the Director of the Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston since June 2000. As Director, Ms. Sultan is responsible for the artistic and administrative leadership of the Blaffer, setting the goals and objectives for the exhibition, publication, and program schedule. In addition she has organized a number of exhibitions featuring artists of national and international scope including
Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration an exhibition organized to travel to ten museums nation-wide (including the Metropolitan Museum in New York) with an accompanying book published by Princeton University Press. She is currently preparing a twenty-year survey of work by Jessica Stockholder scheduled for September 2004.

Prior to joining the Blaffer Gallery, Ms. Sultan was curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, a position she held for 12 years. During that time, Ms. Sultan organized some 40 exhibitions and publications, and introduced the work of many emerging artists, often providing them their first museum exposure and interpretive writing.

Ms. Sultan has traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad and lectured on issues related to contemporary visual art and culture. An accomplished author, her most recent publications include Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration published by Princeton University Press; Seeing and Believing: The Art of Nancy Burson, published by Twin Palms Press, Santa Fe; Donald Lipski: A Brief History of Twine published by the Madison Art Center and distributed by DAP/Distributed Art Publishers, New York; and Kerry James Marshall published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York; She was a member of the founding board of Etant donné the French-American Endowment for Contemporary Art, and co-commissioner for the international exhibition at the Taijon South Korea International World exhibition. She is a member of the International Council of Museums, the International Association of Art Critics, Association of College and University Museums and Galleries, and the College Art Association (member Lifetime Achievement for Art Writing Award Committee).

Sultan received her BFA in Painting from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, and her MA in Museum Studies from the Center for Museum Studies at John F. Kennedy University, San Francisco.
