You can start by attending one of our Informational or General Meetings throughout the semester. Although this isn't required, meetings give you the opportunity to learn about MVP and the upcoming volunteer opportunities lined up for each semester. Information about upcoming meetings can be found on the events tab on our website. Afterwards, you can fill out the online membership form and browse the volunteer opportunities tab on our website to find volunteer events that are of interest to you. Membership is completely free and open to the entire student body. Once you find an event that you would like to volunteer at, fill out the registration form and an officer from our team will contact you with more information.
In order to volunteer with MVP, students must first fill out the online membership form by clicking here. Then, you can click on the volunteering opportunities tab to learn about upcoming events and fill out the registration form for any event that you would like to volunteer at. Once you have registered, the officer overseeing the event will contact you via email a few days prior to the event with details about carpooling, meeting location, attire, and the volunteer tasks and responsibilities.
There is no membership fee. The Metropolitan Volunteer Program is a fee-funded student organization, which means that it is funded through the University by Student Fees. Consequently, students do not have to pay to volunteer or become a member.
The only membership requirement is that members and volunteers must be students currently enrolled at the University of Houston.
Students who volunteer 6 or more hours can receive an MVP shirt. The shirt can be picked up at the MVP office, which is located at the University Center North Rm. N119, between 10 am and 4 am Monday through Friday. It can also be picked up at General Meetings, which are held throughout the semester. To find more information about upcoming meetings, visit the events tab of our website.
Yes, MVP will track service hours for volunteer work done through our organization. The activity sheet, which can be found under the Member’s Corner Tab of the website, shows the events that each student involved with MVP has participated in as well as the number of service hours accumulated. It is updated every Monday at 5 pm.
You can download the Community Service Verification Form by clicking here. Fill out the top portion and bring the form to our office during office hours to be signed by an officer. Our office is located in Room N119 of the University Center. You can find directions to our office as well as office hours by clicking here.
Yes! We arrange carpool for our smaller, off-campus ongoing events and use busses for the larger off-campus events. If you need transportation to an event or can provide transportation, please indicate that on the sign-up form when you register. Carpool drivers are entered into a raffle to win various gift cards at our end of the year banquet.
There are many ways that MVP can help non-profit organizations reach student volunteers. We can post volunteer opportunities in the weekly newsletter that we email to members and volunteers, invite a speaker from your organization to speak at a general MVP meeting which is held monthly, or provide volunteers for one-time events by positing the event on our website and actively recruiting volunteers. MVP also hosts a bi-annual volunteer fair which gives organizations the opportunity to reach students looking for volunteer opportunities. Please fill out the volunteer request form on our website, and an officer from our team will contact you to discuss how we can help you reach volunteers.
Click here to learn about all the ways you can take a leadership role within MVP. If you’re just starting out, consider joining our All-Star Committee, which meets on a bi-weekly basis and the assists the Officers and Co-Chairs with organizing, planning, and leading MVP events. MVP members can join the All-Star Committee at any point during the school year. Students can also apply to become a co-chair for either the Marketing, On-going Service Events, or Annual Service Events Committee. Co-chairs work directly with the chairs to organize and oversee MVP events and require a year-long commitment of at least 5 hours a week. Co-chair applications are due at the beginning of the fall semester. Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to apply!
The best place to find the most updated information about MVP volunteer opportunities and events is on our website. We also send out newsletters on a weekly basis to our members and volunteers with information about upcoming volunteering opportunities through Metropolitan Volunteer Program as well as opportunities to volunteer with other non-profit agencies in the greater Houston area. You can subscribe to the newsletter listserv by emailing our Office Assistant at email@example.com or by completing the membership form.
If you can’t attend an event that you signed up for, please email the officer that is overseeing the event at least 24 hours in advance so MVP can sign up another volunteer to fill your spot.
If the registration form for an event is closed or unavailable, it is likely that all of the spots for that volunteer opportunity have been filled. You can contact the officer that is overseeing the event to find out if your name can be added to a wait list or additional spots have opened up.
