Visiting International Studies Program

The Visiting International Studies Program (VISP) is designed for students from other U.S. universities and colleges to participate in a UH learning abroad program. Credit is matriculated from the foreign institution via a UH transcript to be sent to the student's home institution. Students must apply to the University of Houston as transient (non-degree seeking) student to participate.

Program Eligibility

  • All applicants must be currently enrolled at another U.S. university or college, and be in good academic standing
  • Students must be admitted to UH before registering or participating in a learning abroad program
  • Current UH students are not eligible and should apply for a learning program through the on-campus process 
  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 
  • Graduate and professional program students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 
  • You must have a valid passport prior to the start of your program 

VISP Application Process 

Prospective VISP students must contact the Learning Abroad office at least 3 months before starting the application process

  • VISP students do not need to come to campus for any part of the process
  • You may be required to provide proof of your Bacterial Meningitis immunization as part of the UH admissions process if you are under the age of 22 at time of application

STEP 1: Schedule a phone or Skype advising session with a Learning Abroad advisor

  • Identify yourself as a prospective VISP student during your advising session
  • Select a learning abroad program 
  • Obtain approval from your home university or college that they will accept your UH transfer credit(s) from the courses you plan to take overseas

STEP 2: Apply to the University of Houston

  • Apply to the University of Houston through ApplyTexas online application
  • You must use the TRANSIENT application and include all required documents
  •  A $75 application fee is due upon completion and paid through the ApplyTexas portal 

STEP 3: Register for your Learning Abroad program

  • Once you have been accepted to UH you can apply for your program 
  • Obtain a copy of your program acceptance letter
  • Pay your program fees directly to the provider (unless participating in a faculty-led program)

STEP 4: Contact the Learning Abroad office

  • Complete and finalize your file and pre-departure requirements
  • Pay the mandatory Learning Abroad services fee of $100

STEP 5:  Prepare for your program and departure

  • Book your flight and in-country transportation
  • Schedule Pre-departure Orientation with a Learning Abroad Advisor
    • Orientations can be done in person, over the phone, or via Skype
