KUHF Honored for Medical News Coverage
The Harris County Medical Society and the
Houston Academy of Medicine have awarded KUHF News with four
of its five radio awards.
Capella Tucker swept the Medical News Series category,
winning both the Award of Excellence and Award of Merit. The
first is for her special week-long series on Bipolar Disorder
and the second is for her week-long series about Juvenile Arthritis.
Both specials prompted many positive calls and letters from
listeners commenting on KUHF's attention to under-reported issues.
In the Medical News Story category, Jim Bell received
the Award of Merit for his story about Shaken Baby Syndrome.
This report has also been complimented for its coverage of an
issue many do not talk about, although this form of child abuse
is unfortunately all too common.
KUHF also came out on top in a difficult competition that included
all media: print, TV and radio. In the Medical Economics category,
KUHF's story about the organ donation system in Texas won the
Award of Excellence.
In other awards news....
Capella Tucker was honored for the Juvenile Arthritis
Series, which recently received the Arthritis Foundation's
National Award for Radio Journalism. The Russell L. Cecil
Awards competition is one of the major medical journalism competitions
in the nation. Established by the Arthritis Foundation in 1956,
the Cecil Awards encourage and honor journalistic efforts that
will educate the public about arthritis and the Arthritis Foundation.
The award is named in honor of Russell L. Cecil, M.D., a pioneer
rheumatologist and past medical director of the Arthritis Foundation.
News Director Debra Fraser has been notified that KUHF has won
a prestigious national award from the Public Radio News Directors
Organization. No word yet on the specifics, but we're certainly
excited about it and will let you know once the results are
made public.
1999 Medical Journalism Awards
The news department has once again been honored for its excellent
local coverage. The most recent awards come from the Harris
County Medical Society and the Houston Academy of Medicine.
In the category of Medical News Stories, KUHF reporter Paul
Pendergraft recieved an Award of Excellence for his story
titled, "Neurofibromatosis: A Disease in Search of an Identity".
In the same category, reporter Marisa Ramirez received
an Award of Merit for her story "Male Breast Cancer". Both of
these reports explored diseases that otherwise recieve little
media attention.
The Medical Society also honored KUHF in the Special Series/Special
Report category with an Award of Excellence for Paul Pendergraft's
series, "Second Chances through Organ Donation". For Special
Report, Marisa Ramirez received an Award of Merit for
her report, "Golf with a Heart". These two reports introduced
KUHF's audience to people actually affected by organ donations,
those who have received life-saving organs and those who have
chosen to donate the organs of a loved one.
KUHF also received an honor in a category that puts all media,
radio, television and print, in competition with each other.
In the Medical Economics category, reporter Capella Tucker
received an Award of Merit for her story, "Clinical Coverage".
It explained federal legislation to provide Medicare coverage
for cancer clinical trials.
Congratulations to the newsroom for these awards and for the
fine job reporters do each day on KUHF. |
