History
The Beta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi was chartered on January 21, 1950 and was the 66th chapter to be chartered. The first class of the Beta Sigma chapter had 16 members and its first honorary member was Robert Hammitt, the band director at the time. Since 1950, the Beta Sigma chapter has initiated 629 brothers that have all worked to make the chapter successful. Out of the 629 brothers, there are 83 honorary members including: Bill Moffit, Judge Roy Hofheinz, Eddie Green as well as some of the current staff members at the University of Houston including: Robert Mayes, Noe Marmolejo, Carol Risinger, Mark Barton, Rhonda Pitts, and the current director of bands, David Bertman. Mr. Bertman is an alumni member from the Delta chapter at the University of Oklahoma and became an honorary member at the University of Houston in the fall of 2001. The Beta Sigma chapter currently has about 30 active members who are working hard to keep the chapter moving forward. A major contributor to the chapter’s success is the current sponsor, Jason Burton. He is an alumni member of the Beta Sigma chapter and is now Assistant Theater Manager for the Moores School of Music.
