Outreach Music Classes

outreachmusicMusical study is a crucial part of early childhood education and promotes a lifelong appreciation of music. Studies show that preschool children who study music have significantly increased abstract reasoning skills, as well as increasing children’s self esteem and overall self-concept. The Early Childhood Outreach Music Classes provide twice-weekly music lessons at selected locations, which currently lack comprehensive, all-inclusive preschool music programs. Master teachers from the Preparatory & Continuing Studies Department lead lessons incorporating singing, musical games, dance, and introduction to musical concepts. They also work with preschool teachers to assist them in incorporating age appropriate music into their classroom curriculum.

PCS provides these classes free of charge for the selected outreach programs.

2010 – 2011 Selected Locations Include:

University of Houston Child Care Center

The UH Child Care Center has been providing exemplary care for children of UH students, faculty, and staff since its inception in 1975. UHCCC strives to build a lifetime foundation for learning by developing trust, social skills, academic skills, and positive self-esteem. Students and teachers are eager to participate in music classes, but lack of funding has been prohibitive.

Third Ward Head Start Program

The Gulf Coast Community Services Association’s Head Start Program at The Third Ward Multi-Service Center is a federally funded, comprehensive, early childhood development program for children ages three to five who come from economically challenged families. This partnership allows PCS to make a positive impact in our community and make significant strides toward making exceptional music instruction available to all regardless of age, race, ethnic origin, or financial means.

Costs associated with these outreach classes exceeds $2,000 per month. PCS depends on financial contributions to sustain this program. If you would like to donate to PCS, please contact the office at 713.743.3398 or via e-mail
