Undergraduate Admissions: Performance from memory is encouraged, but not required.

Auditions for undergraduate study in organ:

  • One work by J.S. Bach or another Baroque composer
  • Two contrasting (one lyrical and one virtuosic) selections by romantic and/or contemporary composers
  • Accurate and fluent sight-reading of a four-part hymn

Applicants with a strong piano background who wish to apply for undergraduate organ study may elect to perform their audition on the piano.  The audition should include the following:

  • An invention or prelude & fugue by J.S. Bach
  • A first movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven (excluding Beethoven op. 49; op. 79; and op. 27, no. 2)
  • A 19th, 20th, or 21st-century composition
  • Evidence of good sight-reading skills at the piano

Undergraduate organ applicants normally audition in the Organ Recital Hall, located in the Fine Arts Building, during one of the Moores School of Music's official undergraduate audition dates. However, the organ area has some flexibility in establishing times and dates for auditions. Before choosing specific compositions and a date for your audition, please contact Daryl Robinson, Director of Organ Studies.

Graduate Admissions:

Masters and Doctoral

Auditions for graduate study in organ (MM, DMA) consist of one one-half hour recital of organ repertoire chosen by the candidate.  The performer should demonstrate the ability to perform music in at least three contrasting musical periods and styles. The quality of performance and choice of repertoire for the MM degree must be at least at the level of a senior recital in organ; that for DMA study must be at the level of a Masters recital in organ.

Certificate in Music Performance

Applicants for the Certificate in Music Performance must upload a video recording for preliminary evaluation purposes along with all other application materials by the priority music application deadline. Both the preliminary video and live audition must consist of a fully memorized recital program of at least sixty minutes in length, containing works representing at least three contrasting musical periods and styles. An interview with the faculty committee will follow the performance audition. Some examination of sight-reading skills may also be part of the audition. 

Graduate organ applicants normally audition in the Organ Recital Hall, located in the Fine Arts Building, during one of the Moores School of Music's official graduate audition dates. However, the organ area has some flexibility in establishing times and dates for auditions. Memorization is welcome but not required. Graduate applicants should perform compositions in a variety of styles and include one major work by J. S. Bach. Applicants must limit their program to 30 minutes. Before choosing specific compositions and a date for your audition, please contact Daryl Robinson, Director of Organ Studies.
