147 Devices for Integrated Principles

Tuesday, May 15, 2018 7 pm - 9 pm

In “147 Devices for Integrated Principles,” Hillerbrand+Magsamen unpack a large “preparedness box” of items while directing the audience to unpack their own smaller boxes, found under their seats, based on the artists’ instructions for how to use the items inside. Applying a Fluxus sensibility to art historical tropes of still life painting, photography and dramatic theater, Hillerbrand+Magsamen playfully engage the audience in the drama of survival.

Hillerbrand+Magsamen perform the explanation of these devices through photography, video, sculpture and performance, punctuated by Kirk Lynn’s experimental and humorous scripted language and Peter Stopshinski’s score. On overlapping screens of various sizes, a continuously panning video reveals the artists and their children interacting with Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions. The images depict sublime survival, inviting audiences to play with ideas and expectations of “preparedness.”

This project is supported in part by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.

About the Artists
The artistic team of Hillerbrand+Magsamen is the collaboration of Stephan Hillerbrand and Mary Magsamen. Together they create sculpture, installation, performance, video and photographic works they call “Suburban Fluxus.” Often including their two children in their work, the family critiques and playfully scrutinizes contemporary suburban life.

Hillerbrand+Magsamen have presented their videos in international film and media festivals including Houston Cinema Arts Festival, London SciFi Film Festival, WAND V Stuttgarter Filmwinter, New York Underground Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Boston Underground Film Festival and MonkeyTown. Their cinematic based installations have been exhibited at the Everson Museum (Syracuse, New York), Center for Photography Woodstock (Woodstock, New York), Diffusion Photography Festival (Wales, U.K.) and Houston Center for Photography.

The artists live and work in Houston with their two children, Madeleine and Emmett. See more of their work at: http://www.hillerbrandmagsamen.com
