College of NSM’s Faculty Development Workshop Series: Data Storytelling

Friday, September 13, 2019

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

A brown-bag lunch on “Data Storytelling: Framing your data as a story” with Dr. Nouhad Rizk, Instructional Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of Houston.

Data analysis is an important skillset for scientists because models are built on the results that we see in experiments. If we are able to properly analyze our experimental data, then we are able to formulate models that better represent reality. However, data analysis is only half of the story. We must also be able to communicate the findings to others and to convince them that the finding is indeed correct.
Storytelling is not as easy as it appears. It takes a great deal of visualization, creativity, and good presentation skills to ace the art of data storytelling. Good storytelling adds a great deal of value to your data and analysis, helping decision-makers to understand the information more quickly and thoroughly, thus enabling them to choose a course of action. This workshop will focus on the art of framing your data as a story.
