Secure File Transfer

To enhance security, we updated the server configuration on February 15, 2006, so that FTP clients will only be able to view documents within the user's home directory.

After changing the FTP configuration, we noticed that some FTP clients were not able to connect to the server. The problem occurs when an application has entered an explicity directory path into its settings. The fix is to go to the settings and clear the path information. We have documented how to do this with several clients:

Dreamweaver

To change the settings on Windows and Mac:

  1. Go to the top menu.
  2. Select Site and then Manage Sites
  3. In the Manage Sites dialog box, select the site you want to fix and click Edit. This will bring up the Site Definition.
  4. In the Site Definition, select the Advanced tab, then click the Category for Remote Info. This will display the following screen:

Fix: Make certain the Host Directory is blank. Click OK which will save the new Site Definition.

If the steps listed above do not work for Dreamweaver, you will need to create a new site.

Only users with previously bookmarked connections are affected. In this case, when you use a bookmarked connection, the following error message will be displayed:

Fix: Simply close the error message, and Fetch will take you to your home directory. You can then navigate to the folder you wanted (and re-create the bookmark).
