VPN Installation for Mac 10.3 or Older

The following is to help support staff and end-users installing the Cisco VPN Client (version 4.8.00.0490) for Mac OS X. A system restart is necessary to complete installation.

System Requirements

Mac OS X 10.2.8-10.3.9, with 30 MB of hard disk space available.

Acquiring The Installation File

Unless application defaults have been changed, downloading the file should place it on the Desktop, creating a disk image file named UHVPN-4.8.00.0490.dmg.

VPN Software Installation

If you have a previous version of the Cisco VPN Client software installed, it must be removed. Look in the Applications folder on the hard drive where VPN is installed. If there is an icon to uninstall the VPN client, use that. Otherwise, drag the icon for the VPN client from the Applications folder to the trash, and empty the trash. Restart the computer. Now you are ready for installation of the new VPN Client.

Open the UHVPN-4.8.00.0490.dmg disk image, if it is not already open. The disk image contents should include Cisco VPN Client.mpkg, and two folders: Profiles and Resources (both empty). Double-click on Cisco VPN Client.mpkg. A series of pop-up windows will appear:

A drop-down window appears. Click the Agree button.
Select a Destination - Click the hard drive icon to select on which drive the VPN client will be installed, then click the Continue button.
Easy Install on "[drive name]" - Click on the bottom right button. Depending on the install, the button will read Upgrade or Install.
Authenticate - Enter your user password, then click the OK button.
Install Software - Click the Close button when the installation is finished.
Restart the computer.

VPN Client Configuration

The client is configured as part of the installation, so the only thing left for a user to do is actually use the VPN client. When prompted for a user name and password, users need to provide their CougarNet ID and password.

In case the configuration file becomes corrupted, profile settings are included below. Users should delete a profile they suspect to be corrupted. To delete the profile, click on the profile entry once to highlight, then click the Delete button in the VPN Client window.

Now you are ready to create a new configuration file. Start the VPN client, opening a client window. Click on the New button located near the top of the window, creating a pop-up window. Enter/configure the following information:

Connection Entries:
Connection Entry: UHVPN
Description: UHVPN
Host: 129.7.254.231

Under the Authentication Tab:
Select the Group Authentication radio button.
NOTE - The password is case sensitive and in all caps.
Name: UHVPN
Password: UHVPN
Confirm Password: UHVPN

Under the Transport Tab:
Check the Enable Transparent Tunneling box.
Select the IPSec over UDP (NAT /PAT) radio button.

Under the Backup Servers Tab:
Check the Enable Backup Servers box.
Click the Add button, creating a pop-up window. Enter 129.7.254.232 for the IP address, and click OK, closing the window.
Click the Add button again, creating another pop-up window. Enter 129.7.254.233 for the IP address, and click OK, closing the window.

Click the Save button. The VPN client is now ready to be used.

*** NOTE: Mac OS X 10.4.x users may notice a /opt folder at the root level of the hard drive. DO NOT delete this folder. If deleted, the VPN client will not run and will have to be reinstalled.
