Disposing of Software

To achieve optimal efficiency and effective use of the technology in the workplace, a department must have a plan for the disposal of software.


Departmental management, technology staff, and users.

Process Overview

  1. Review and follow Property Management's policy on the Disposal of Excess Equipment for guidance on the disposal of capitalized assets valued at less than $25,000.
  2. Retire software according to your department's predetermined software refresh schedule.
  3. Refer to the recommended sanitization process for the disposal of excess equipment that addresses:
  4. Dispose of software according to Property Management and the State of Texas policy on property disposal.
  5. For software below the capitalized threshold, consider whether it has value to another user or unit in the university. If it does not, dispose of it.
